      The developer of the board software provided a tool for migrating the data from one board to another. Unfortunately, it does not provide the option to merge the contents of several boards into one database.
      I am sure that there are ways to get that sorted, out but the decision was made to use the tools at hand and not tinkering with any kind of scripts - which means in the case of Ikariam, alongside many other communities that experienced the same fate, scrapping the existing board and starting a completely new one.

      Official language will be English on all board, but there will be sub boards where biggest and most active non english speaking communities will be allowed to use their language, like for example in KingsAge there is International sub board where you use English for communication, but there is also German, Russian, Italian, Spain, Turkish and etc sub boards where players are allowed to use their native language to communicate.

      using 3rd party software to do things like this always scare me... poor decision.. but then again, i guess we're used to that sort of thing from GF....

      If you mean, will there be the same moderators than now, my answer would be yes, because since it will be new board where all communities will be together there will be lot of work to do. Maybe some moderators from smallest communities which boards will be closed permanently and won't have their own sub boards will choose to leave, but how many will choose to do that?

      Regardless question about why they don't transfer accounts to new board, where answer is because of the same ID on different boards don't satisfy my, because when there was server merge it wasn't problem when players from server that was closed had the same ID as in server where they transferred. It's more likely that they don't want to transfer accounts, that are created and haven't used for a while and make clean new start for everyone.

      but board merges are not the same as merges of game servers, are they?
      For one, those are two completely different systems, maintained and developed by different people and companies.

      The tools provided by the developer Woltlab do not come equipped for this scenario, so this isn't even going to be a "merge" in the sense of communities being transferred, but rather a merge in the sense of: We created a new board and the old one will go into read only mode and eventually shut down.

      This means it is going to be a completely fresh new start for all of us.

Helps with the "exactly how inactive should someone be to not be ported over to new board" issue as well as the time and resources to actually do the moving. Stinks a bit for those of us posting since 2008/09 :) because we have a lot of memories and history (and impressive post counts!) but it's not something we have a vote in.

      Are you guys as admin able to manually edit in player post counts and likes received (The likes received is something I like seeing as it can give you an insight into a poster and their standing, ina vague way, in the board community) if we provide them for you with our new accounts?

      That'd be awesome.

      P.S. New accounts means all our warning histories get wiped out and we get to go again from the start. This is amusing. I can see some people playing the "lets get banned before the boards close" game though.

      Actually, you couoldn't have the same username in a new server if someone stole that name first on the server before the merge occurred. Multiple high end players with huge histories to their names had their names stolen in both the first and second merges. Someone tried stealing mine and mis-spelt it, and that's the only reason my main was transferred fine. Kola and backspace from omikron for example, names stolen. It was utter bull crap. Glad you had no issues, many did.

      Sadly no. In the past we can force the boards to recalculate those post counts, but that's because they were still tied to threads (which won't be there anymore).

      And yeah the primary issue with it being a thing we could do for game was that game was written by Gameforge. Board software is handled by Woltlab.

      See, I'd totally be like, screw the boards, it's not serving any purpose other then socialising in spam threads and no one gives a crap about your piddly little farming reports and wars that don't achieve anything. Indeed, the only war thread I'd be preserving would be the one from Beta where they are systematically wiping -HFX- out and have been at it for what? approaching2 years now, that's a pretty epic thread and shows ACTUAL DAMAGE whereas combat is just whatever at this point. Yeah words that'll cause a commotion, but it is what it is. So I'd be all screw the boards, we're gettings crewed anyways, why don't we just port to discord and TALK TO EACH OTHER INSTEAD. There's message boards in discord channels also, it'd be easy. Use a section ofi the wiki for notable events to be recorded and bam.

      If instead, talking about the game, well then, yeah, I'd probably end up saving the diminishing player base by stopping this pointless GF didn't learn from the lesson the first time or the second time for keepingd ropping new servers every month or two and just do short term 6 month long servers that reset and leave a scoreboard function carrying over for the next 5 years (so 12 odd high scores consecutively saved to the servers to show past victpors and have people able to get consecutive placings each 6 month reset. Then You have these short terms ervers and existing long term servers. Players hve options for both. I'd probably emss with god mode as well to make it so as on older servers god mode lasts for 100,000 TS but all players below 100,000 TS xcan farme ach other idf they want but as soon as they hit someone above 100,000 TS then they lose god mode (because if you bite off more then you can handle,s ucks to be you). That'd solve issues of new players joining odler servers and feeling overwhelmed and hit ona nd farmed before they get to develop. Finally, in the yearly review of how 'awesome" gameforge is and their games, I'd include Ikariam alongside OGame in their videos, because not including us is a spit in the eye that annoyed many, many people.

      Agreed. I'm pretty sure that's the intent. What's being sacrificed (histories, post counts, etc) in order to achieve this, though, is a pretty high price. Here's hoping it's worth it. :unsure:

    • From my observance, many of the moves that GF makes that seem feckless... Appear so due to cultural differences. They seem poorly thought out, because they are coming from a different mindset. It really is their game to do as they wish with, we come to play in it... Most of us for free.

      As someone that is on the first page of page counts, largely for posts I made close to a decade ago, yeah it kind of stinks. At its height, there were some epic moves made by some players here. You can't know about that, without an archive to refer to. Hell, there are some players that haven't been around here for YEARS, that vastly influenced the game and how it was played. Shaped the culture... Some of us did the things that are the reason that some of the rules that people are complaining about exist.

      The fact that they are making a change is not an issue. I can see why they have to do it. I can see why we are going to see this become a clusterfark, because we have filet mignon tastes on an EBT budget. Quite frankly, we don't generate enough revenue to justify the manpower to do it properly. The forums are less relevant, because they are no longer a functional requisite to prosecute a war. We have less than 10 percent of the player base that this game had at its peak... It only appears slightly better, due to server merges and rampant multiple accounts (which are now legal). I'll play the game in the manner that pleases me, until they shut off the lights.

      But, the forums here will never be what they once were and certainly will never have the drama, intrigue, culture and depth of community that they did a decade ago. I can lament their passing, and recognize there are precious few that still give a damn anymore.
